Remember, quality of rail service differs from country to country

Ride on night trains if possible. You'll cover lot's of km and save the cost of accomodation.

When Traveling by Train

Always keep your passport handy

The first time you board a train, validate your pass at the railway station

If you use your Pass, beginning your trip after 7:00 p.m. and
ending it after 3:00 a.m. the next morning allows you to use the
following day's date on the pass when you depart. It saves a full day of your
pass.

Restaurant facilities on trains are costly

Bring your own food and drink.

Bring a couple of liters of bottled water. Don't drink the water from the bathroom taps.
Packing and care of your Personal Belongings

Pack as light as possible. Try to make one bag or backpack the limit

A lot of stations might not have baggage carts available

Protect your belongings by locking them to the overhead rack, (bring
a small bicycle cable lock) especially on night trains.

Don't put items under your seat... you can't watch them

Wear your moneybelt if you plan to sleep on an overnight train

If you have valuables in your pocket, use safety pins to "lock"
them. Keep what you need handy

Sleep in your clothes, you never know what can happen. Be
positive but prepared.

Try to keep your belongings with you if you leave the compartment

Lock the compartment door, if possible, especially at night.

Protect yourself from pickpockets and scam artists.

When waiting in a station always keep your stuff in FRONT of you

Be careful discussing travel plans with people in your compartment.

Keep an eye on people around you.

Don't "show off" your belongings (stereo headphones,
credit cards...)

Keep your passport and tickets at hand before boarding the train.

Don't open your moneybelt or backpack in front of strangers

Be carefly of people who seem non-threatening like women with babies, groups of children
and even some English-speaking backpackers

Be careful of fast talking stories about lost money or luggage.

Be honest and friendly but remember, human nature is still alive
