The university is particularly strong in sciences with faculties for science (Faculté des Sciences de Luminy), sport sciences (Faculté des Sciences du Sport), engineering (École supérieure d'ingénieurs de Luminy) and economic science and management (Faculté des Sciences Économiques et de Gestion).

The medical school comprises the faculties of Medicine, Pharmacy and Dentistry.

  • Institut Universitaire de Technologie (University Institute for technology)
  • Institut Régional du Travail (Regional institute for work)

The Université d'Aix-en-Provence was initially created in 1413 by Louis II de Provence. In 1791, like every university in France, it was disolved and the faculties were dispersed between the two cities of Aix-en-Provence and Marseille and became autonomous.

On 21 April 1881 by decree of the conseil municipal (city council) the medical school was opened at the palais du Pharo by the Vieux Port, Marseille. In 1969, two universities were established between Aix-en-Provence and Marseille.

In 1973, the third was created (Université d'Aix-Marseille III). In 1994, the Université d'Aix-Marseille II took the name of Université de la Méditerranée.

Université Paul Cézanne Aix-Marseille III

The Université Paul Cézanne Aix-Marseille III is a university located in both Aix-en-Provence and Marseille. It is one of the universities of Aix-Marseille.

It was founded in 1409 by Louis II d'Aragon and now has 22,500 students, 3000 of which are international students. It specialises in law, political science and economics although it also has a faculty for exact sciences and technology.

Institut d'études politiques d'Aix-en-Provence

The Institut d'études politiques d'Aix-en-Provence, also known as IEP d'Aix-en-Provence is a political science grande école, founded in 1956 on the premises of the old University of Provence Faculty of Law.

It is located in Aix-en-Provence and can be found opposite the Cathédrale Saint Sauveur on Rue Gaston de Saporta. The IEP is associated with the University of Aix-Marseille III (Université Paul Cézanne).

École Nationale Supérieure d'Arts et Métiers

The École Nationale Supérieure d'Arts et Métiers (ENSAM) is a French Engineering university and grand établissement.

The major fields of study at the ENSAM are:

  • Mechanical engineering
  • Industrial and manufacturing engineering
  • Systems engineering

Most students complete preparatory classes in order to attend grandes écoles; thus, the first year in ENSAM is actually a third year of university study.

In most cases, students follow the two first years in one of the centers of Aix-en-Provence, Angers, Bordeaux, Châlons-en-Champagne, Cluny, Lille, or Metz. The center of Paris is reserved for third year-students.

Each year, approximatively 1,000 students get a 2nd cycle diplôme d'ingénieur de l'Ecole Nationale Supérieure d'Arts et Métiers, and 50 students a 3rd cycle degree.

The school originated in Liancourt, Oise, with an initiative taken by the Duke of Rochefoucauld-Liancourt in 1780; it was originally meant to provide in-depth training for dragoon officers. After 1800, the institution became known as the École d'Arts et Métiers.

The second school of this kind was founded in 1804 at Beaupréau (near Angers), but was actually in use after a third one was already functional in Châlons-en-Champagne. The last of ENSAM institutions to be established is the one in Metz (1997).

The schools in various locations were turned into engineer training institutions in 1907.

The famous alumni include:

  • Pierre Bézier (Paris, 1927), inventor of CAD
  • Jean-Lou Chameau (Lille 1972), president of the California Institute of Technology
  • Julien Dupuy, (Chalons, 2001), pioneer of "charniere" for Renault
  • André Ertaud (Paris, 1928), pioneer of nuclear energy
  • Alexandru G. Golescu (Paris, 1839), Romanian politician
  • Claude Goubet (Angers, 1853), inventor of the submarine
  • Wilhem (aka Guillaume-Louis Bocquillon) (Liancourt, 1795 - Compiègne, 1800), composer
